Money Can Buy You Happiness?

8 Jan

As I was texting one of my friends today, she began to tell me about a question that was raised in her class. The professor asked the entire class what makes people happy? One of her fellow classmates responded with the answer money. In my opinion this is one of the biggest misconceptions in our society today.

moneystackFor as long as I can remember I’ve heard that money can buy you happiness. We’ve been told over and over again that with enough money you can buy anything you want and erase all your sadness. Through my life experiences I’ve come to learn that if you are truly unhappy with your life before you’re introduced to money, in more cases than not money can only complicate and make things worse. You may temporarily feel a sense of happiness when you’re able to buy anything beyond your wildest imagination, but the truth is when the spending is over and you go to bed at night, all you’re left with is the reminder that deep down you’re still unhappy. The money becomes a shield that quickly vanishes when all the materialism goes away.

The examples of this are seen everywhere. Celebrities and wealthy business people around the world have enough money to buy anything they could ever dream of, yet the consistent pattern we have come to recognize is that the people who are not fully content and stable in their lives before money, tend to lead a destructive lifestyle. You see them getting messed up in drugs, going to rehab, losing love ones as well as friends and at times going as far as committing suicide! So the overplayed anthem that money can buy you happiness couldn’t be farther from the truth, because even with all that money these people are still clearly unhappy and unstable.

Don’t get me wrong, money is great to have, is essential in our day-to-day lives and is something that everyone works to have. However, people should work to be self content in their lives first before reaching out and trying to find happiness through money.

“What would a homeless person do if they were given $100,000?”

    … it’s pretty sad.
